Okay, today I am thanking God for:
1) Health insurance
2) Dr. B.
3) That Adam went in to get his moles checked
So, Adam went to go see his primary care physician about a week ago to get some funny-looking moles checked, ended up getting two of them biopsed and we just heard back that one of them had melanoma in it.
They think that they got it all, but to be sure they're giving Adam a referral to a dermatologist to do a slightly deeper biopsy. Would you please pray that there isn't any more, and that they got it all in the first biopsy? Also, that if there is any more melanoma anywhere else, that the dermatologist would find it and be able to cut it out too? (The dermatologist being, I presume, more expert at finding skin cancer than even the excellent Dr. B., Adam's primary care physician.)
I'm not surprised that he had some melanoma, given that Adam's so fair-skinned, and grew up under a tropical sun, but wow, cancer, even skin cancer, is scary. It sounds like we probably caught it in time, but I doubt this will be the last round of melanoma for Adam, given his childhood in Indonesia. So, we'd really appreciate your prayers that any more cancer would be caught early, like this one, and that Adam would be around with us for a long, long time.

The appropriate treatment for Melanoma is marginal excision, which is essentially taking out a chunk of flesh surrounding and undercutting the melanoma cells. Punch biopsy is not a sufficent melanoma treatment as the punch can introduce cancerous cells to the surrounding tissue. The key element of diagnosis is the thickness of the tumor as measured on the Breslow scale. There are more things you should know and ask your doctor specific to lymph node metastases. Melanoma is a serious cancer that is easily treated if caught early. Read as much as you can on the subject to partner with your Dr. on treatment. Hooray for good insurance and good doctors! We'll pray it's all done with. And don't worry - my dad had those all the time, and he's still perfectly healthy and cancer free. :)
