preemie survival stats

With help from the excellent folk over at monoamniotic.org (check it out for lots more good information on momo pregnancies), I found some preemie survival statistics. You can see them here. The page has one link for survival and another link for disability rates.

Those stats are from the late 1990's, so presumably the odds are a bit better now, but the upshot is that you can figure the major disability rate by the survival rate. So if at 26 weeks gestation, a baby has an 80% survival rate (which is about right), the ones who survive have an 80% chance of surviving WITHOUT major disability (mental retardation, inability to walk unassisted, blindness or deafness).

By next week, the girls' chances are over 90%. :D
