how it went absolutely nothing like we expected, and we had a great time anyway.
Jess gave a brief sneak-peak at our camping trip that wasn't. I'm staying home today (no fever, but still stuffy and stiff) and figured I would let people know just how amazing our vacation was. Without a doubt, this will be something on which we will look back and laaaaugh. (Behold me, how I properly placed all of the prepositions in that sentence!)
The trip:
So you all know that the Saturday night before we left, Brigid threw up all over herself and her bed in the middle of the night. She appeared to be her normal chipper self come morning, so we figured maybe it was something she ate and she was fine. The next couple of days contained one or maybe two more sporadic vomitting episodes, and some of the most amazing toddler diarrhea (which I must point out is one of the most randomly spelled words in the English language) but she seemed to be acting normal in between, so we still weren't convinced it was anything about which we should worry. (Behold the tricksy prepositions, how I am not fooled by their schemes.)
This belief continued until we left for the camping trip. We had planned to drive up as far as Stockton - about half way - and stay the night at some friends of Jess' family so that the kids wouldn't have quite such a long day of it. The trip went fine, and everyone was doing okay until the last 5 minutes, when Brie threw up all over herself and her car seat. Jess' parents called ahead and they had paper towels waiting for us when we arrived. The car seat cover was washed, the car seat itself was hosed off, and Brigid was cleaned up enough that she was happy again.
That night, we woke up to find that Brigid had had diarrhea again, this time all over the bed she was in. More bedding washed, along with a toddler and her pajamas. Now we were worried. In the space of 24 hours, Brigid had gone through 5 changes of clothes, on car seat and one set of bedding, and we were having trouble keeping up even with running water and electricity.
Instead of driving up the Downieville that day, we spent the day where we were, hanging out and relaxing. Brigid took three naps, at which point we were convinced that our little girlie was no longer feeling fine. We finally - and with much disappointment - admitted to ourselves that our wonderful vacation in the mountains, with the rivers and the stars, was not meant to be. We spent one more night and then came home, where we spent the week camping on the living room floor, turning off out electric lights, sitting in the back yard at night gazing at the star, and going for walks all over town. It was one of the best vacations we've ever had.
